It is the Summer of 1903 and the Smith family eagerly awaits the arrival of the World’s Fair in their very own St. Louis. Over the course of a year, the family experiences romance, heartache, troubles, and opportunity in the same way they always have; together. Told through a series of seasonal vignettes, this heartfelt musical features a multi-generational cast and well-beloved tunes such as “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “The Trolley Song,” “The Boy Next Door,” “Meet Me In St Louis,” and many, many more! This show is perfect for all ages, and will have you laughing, crying, and feeling right at home with the Smiths, when you meet us in St. Louis!

Character Descriptions

Note: The age listed for most is the character’s STAGE AGE. This means that actor need not be that age, only able to portray that range while on stage. For TOOTIE and AGNES, the ACTUAL AGE is listed.

* denotes those auditioning/considered for this character may be asked to attend callbacks, on April 13.

Mr. Alonso Smith* – Male, Baritone. The father of the Smith family. Equally devoted to his work as a lawyer and his role as head of the house. Struggles to connect with his children, although beneath his businessman exterior, lies a heart of gold. (Stage Age: 40-50)

Mrs. Anna Smith* – Female, Mezzo. The gracious and charming mother of the Smith family. Leads with a firm, yet gentle manner. Keeps the family together, through thick and thin. (Stage Age: 40-50)

Lon Smith* – Male, Tenor. The oldest of the Smith children. A Princeton man, embarking on his academic career. Boyish and charming, he takes his responsibility as a brother to heart. (Stage Age: 20)

Rose Smith* – Female, Mezzo/Soprano. Beautiful and possessing a spark of je ne sais quoi. Concerned with keeping up with the trends and remaining an elusive mystery to her adoring suitors, although her temper can get in the way. A loving sister. (Stage Age: 19)

Esther Smith* – Female, Alto/Mezzo. A headstrong, hopeless romantic, whose fanciful notions of romance can’t be disturbed. At times impulsive and brash, and a fierce protector of those she loves. (Stage Age: 17)

Agnes Smith* – Female, Mezzo/Treble. Independent and forthright. Her family would probably call her a tomboy. Her attention is always divided between fun and mischief, which she often gets into with her younger sister, Tootie. (Actual Age: 10-13)

Tootie Smith* – Female, Mezzo/Treble. The youngest of the Smith children. Bright-eyed and serious-faced. Possessing a slightly macabre sense of humor and an abundance of dolls that have the unfortunate habit of dying. (Actual Age: 7-11)

Grandpa Prophater*  – Male, Baritone. Mrs. Smith’s father. Is a Civil War veteran. A spry gentleman who has remained a child at heart. Will do anything to keep his grandchildren smiling. (Stage Age: 60+)

Katie* – Female, Alto. The Smith’s cook and housemaid. Irish, good-humored, and equally coarse and loving. She has a slight Irish brogue. Is practically one of the family herself, and the Smiths depend on her as such. (Stage Age: 40-60)

John Truitt – Male, Baritone/Tenor. The quintessential boy next door. Handsome and athletic, and a little shy. Another Princeton man, he is Lon’s friend as well as the Smiths’ next door neighbor. He falls in love with Esther. (Stage Age: 19-20)

Warren Sheffield – Male, Baritone. Rose’s suitor. Is a spiffy, city boy from New York. Sincere in his affections although a bit clumsy in expressing  himself. (Stage Age: 22)
